Father's store Cuba Illinois

And now a photo from the Wayback Machine. My father's store circa 1962. Located in the tiny town of Cuba on Illinois, America; a short 7 miles from Kensington(other). I'd report there each day after school to sweep the floor and front walk, put bikes and lawnmowers together and do whatever else that came up. There were only 1200 people in the town but they supported 2 hardware stores,2 groceries,a clothing store, furniture store,3 gas(petrol) stations, 3 cafes, and various other businesses. But now in 2008 there's just empty buildings for the most part. Put out of business by Sprawl-Mart mega stores in nearby towns.

1200 people sounds about right to me! Death to Sprawl-Mart (except the flute dept.) :)
Did you inherit the shop? and is George still alive?
The town my sister lives in has one supermarket (well, mediocre!) but otherwise is still a small market town with many family run shops. Photos to follow, I hope - she's bought a camera that makes mine look like a dinosaur; and mine is pretty good! :)
My father died 30 years ago(only 54) and the store closed soon after. I wanted to go my own way at the time and didn't have an interest in running the store. Turns out it was a good thing since the Sprawlmarts were starting to be built and a small business can't compete. Your sister is lucky to live where there are still family run shops. It's becoming quite rare.
photos from sis will soon appear! Also, the demise of SprawlMart Inc.
:)
